The side income that caught up with the salary

Omar Bou Ghanim — Gradezilla graduate

Before Gradezilla

Omar was not starting from zero. He was already working in marketing, and that is exactly what made the gap obvious: he could see the digital side of the field moving faster than his own knowledge of it.

Why Gradezilla

“I was already in the marketing field, but I felt I needed deeper knowledge in digital marketing. After looking into my options, I found Gradezilla to be the best choice.”

What he was afraid of

The same thing most working professionals worry about. “My biggest fear was that it would be a waste of time and would not produce real results.” Nobody wants to spend their evenings on a course and come out the other side holding nothing but a certificate.

The moment it clicked

It was not a complicated tactic. It was realising how simple it can be to put a business in front of exactly the right people. “It clicked when I realised how simple it can be to help my business, or a client’s business, reach its targeted audience and succeed — rather than just hearing about other people’s success stories.”

The campaign that proved it

He put it to work on So Cal Doha, an upscale dining destination in Qatar that had just rebranded. The page had a following, but a hollow one: the rebrand had left it carrying ghost followers, and the engagement did not reflect anything real.

Omar did not jump straight to promoting events. He spent the first two months rebuilding the audience — 5,979 Instagram profile visits at 0.20 QAR each ($0.055), and 1,500 genuine new followers.

That groundwork is what made month three work. With a warm, correctly targeted audience in place, he ran direct-response campaigns around the restaurant’s events. His best one turned a 500 QAR budget into 195 WhatsApp conversations at 2.56 QAR each — about $0.70 per person who actually messaged the restaurant — reaching 14,163 people along the way.

Where he is today

Omar still works full-time in sales. But his freelance social media work now earns as much as his salary does, and it is work he actually wants to do. “More importantly, it allows me to work in a field I am truly passionate about.”

The part of the course he still uses every week: “The ROI analysis and conversion rate metrics. They help me evaluate whether my campaigns are performing well or need optimisation.”
