How to Reset Your Facebook Algorithm: Meta’s New ‘Your Algorithm’ Controls (2026)

Gradezilla featured image: How to reset your Facebook algorithm with Meta's new Your algorithm controls

You can’t wipe the Facebook algorithm with one button, but you can now retrain it in plain language. On 13 October 2026, Meta announced Your algorithm for Facebook: a control in the three-dot menu on posts where you add and manage the topics you want in Feed and Reels, and explain in your own words what you want more or less of. Meta says recommendations adapt in real time.

Key takeaways

  • Updated on 13 October 2026: Meta expanded Your algorithm on Facebook, so you can add and manage topics for Feed and Reels from the three-dot menu on a post (Meta).
  • Plain-language feedback: after you tap Interested or Not interested, Facebook may ask follow-up questions so you can describe what you want more or less of (Meta).
  • No single reset button: unlike Instagram’s “Reset suggested content”, the sources we reviewed describe no one-tap reset on Facebook. You retrain it with signals.
  • Copy-paste “reset” posts are a hoax: pasting text into a post does not change the algorithm (WRDW).
  • For brands: Meta announced no new ad targeting with it. In our view, organic posts need a clear, consistent topic people would actively choose.

How do you reset your Facebook algorithm in 2026?

If you want to reset your Facebook algorithm, the honest answer is that you retrain it rather than reset it. Instagram announced a “Reset suggested content” option in November 2024 that clears recommendations across Explore, Reels and Feed. The sources we reviewed describe no equivalent one-tap reset on Facebook. A March 2026 report from WRDW’s “What the Tech” put it bluntly: you can’t reset Facebook’s algorithm, because your feed is driven by the posts you interact with, the Pages you follow and what you watch or click.

What changed this week is how much direct control you get. Facebook’s new Your algorithm sits on top of the older tools (hide, snooze, unfollow, Favorites and Content preferences), so a practical “reset” now means combining them:

  1. Tell Facebook your topics. On any post in Feed or Reels, open the three-dot menu and choose Your algorithm. Add the topics you want to see and remove the ones you don’t.
  2. Give feedback on posts. Tap Interested or Not interested. Facebook may ask follow-up questions; answer in your own words, for example what you liked or what you want less of.
  3. Clear the clutter. From the same menu, hide posts or ads you don’t want, snooze an account for a while, or unfollow it.
  4. Lower sensitive content. In Settings & privacy, open Content preferences to reduce political and sensitive content, as Axios describes.
  5. Prioritise people. Add close friends to Favorites so their posts appear near the top, and use the Friends feed when you only want posts from friends.
  6. Review off-platform data. Axios also points to Off-Facebook activity in Settings, where you can remove data from other websites that feeds into recommendations.

Meta says the new signals are combined with the ones Facebook already uses, such as the posts you like and comment on and what you watch. Meta says changes show up in real time, so give feedback consistently and watch how your Feed responds.

What is Facebook’s Your algorithm feature?

Your algorithm is a set of AI-powered controls for Facebook Feed and Reels. According to Meta’s announcement, it gives you a place to “directly add and manage the topics you want to see”, expands the Interested and Not interested feedback with follow-up questions, and updates the three-dot menu on posts so these tools are easier to find.

Meta says large language models help its ranking systems understand the intent behind what you type, and that recommendations respond in real time, adapting within the same session. Social Media Today, which covered the launch on 13 October 2026, notes that this builds on an earlier Your algorithm option and quotes Meta describing “an algorithm you can actually talk to.”

Meta has not shared adoption figures, a full rollout schedule or a country list, so you may not see the option yet in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia or elsewhere in the Gulf.

Which Facebook feed controls exist, and what does each one do?

One limitation worth knowing: Social Media Today notes you can switch to a reverse-chronological view, but you can’t make it the default, and Facebook returns to the algorithmic feed when you leave and come back.

How is it different from Instagram and Threads?

Meta has been rolling out similar controls across its apps. TechCrunch reports that Instagram first launched Your Algorithm for Reels in December 2025 and expanded it to Feed and Explore in June 2026, while Threads has a related feature called “Dear Algo”.

ContentGrip cautions that these products shouldn’t be treated as interchangeable, so check how each one works in the app you’re managing.

Do the copy-and-paste “reset my algorithm” posts work?

No. Every few months a post circulates claiming that pasting a message will “reset” your feed so you see friends again. WRDW’s tech reporter explains there is no hidden command that changes the algorithm when you paste text, and warns that these posts spread as engagement bait. Scammers may reply offering paid “account recovery”, and the post itself can come from a friend’s hacked account. Use the real controls above instead.

What does Your algorithm mean for brands and marketers?

Meta’s announcement doesn’t mention creators, businesses or advertisers, so what follows is our analysis, informed by ContentGrip’s coverage.

  • Topic clarity matters more. When people can tell Facebook which topics they want, a post that clearly delivers on a topic likely has an easier path into recommended Feed and Reels. In our view, a vague promotional post that fits no topic gives the system little to match.
  • Consistency beats random variety. ContentGrip notes that consistent subject matter helps a team understand which audience need each post serves, and that any shift in topic should be deliberate. In our view, for a business page that means 3 to 5 content pillars your audience would actively choose.
  • Value first, offer second. ContentGrip’s example: a practical travel post should deliver real travel information, not act as a thin wrapper for a promotion.
  • Measure carefully. Meta hasn’t said how much weight the new inputs carry. Log each post’s intended topic, compare like-for-like posts and don’t blame or credit Your algorithm for every swing in reach. Our guide to impressions vs reach explains which numbers to watch.
  • Ads: nothing announced. ContentGrip notes the announcement adds no marketer-controlled targeting field and doesn’t establish that users’ descriptions become a new ad audience. Keep paid planning in Ads Manager (see Boosting vs Ads Manager).

In our view, this is the same direction Instagram has taken. If you’ve read our breakdown of Instagram’s guidance on engagement and reach, the lesson carries over: original, clearly focused content that people choose to engage with is what recommendation systems reward.

What should you do now? A 7-point checklist

  • Open the three-dot menu on a post and check whether Your algorithm is available on your account yet.
  • Add 5 to 10 topics you actually want, including your industry, and remove ones you don’t.
  • Spend a week tapping Interested or Not interested, and answer the follow-up questions in specific words.
  • Set Content preferences, Favorites and snoozes so your feed reflects what you need to see for work.
  • For your business page, write down 3 to 5 content pillars and tag each planned post with one.
  • Make every organic post useful on its own: a tip, an answer, a result. Our guide to getting more leads from social media without paid ads shows how.
  • Track reach and engagement by pillar for four to six weeks before drawing conclusions. Short-form video matters here too; see how to make a Reel go viral.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reset the Facebook algorithm?

Not with one button, based on the sources we reviewed. Instagram has a “Reset suggested content” option, but on Facebook you retrain recommendations with the new Your algorithm topics, Interested and Not interested feedback, and older tools like hide, snooze, unfollow and Content preferences.

What is Your algorithm on Facebook?

It’s a control Meta announced on 13 October 2026 that lets you add and manage the topics you want to see in Facebook Feed and Reels. You find it in the three-dot menu on a post. Meta says recommendations update in real time, within the same session.

How do I tell Facebook what I want to see?

Open the three-dot menu on a post in Feed or Reels and choose Your algorithm to add or manage topics. You can also tap Interested or Not interested; Facebook may then ask follow-up questions so you can describe, in your own words, what you want more or less of.

Does the copy-and-paste “reset my algorithm” post work?

No. WRDW’s tech reporter explains that pasting text into a post does not change the algorithm, and that these posts are engagement bait that scammers can exploit with fake “recovery” offers. Use the real controls in the post menu and settings instead.

Is Your algorithm available in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia?

Meta says it is rolling the feature out but has not published a country list or timeline. If you don’t see it in the three-dot menu yet, the older controls still work, and the new option may appear later.

Does Your algorithm change Facebook ad targeting?

Not as far as Meta has said. The announcement covers organic recommendations in Feed and Reels, and ContentGrip notes it adds no marketer-controlled targeting field or new ad audience. Keep planning paid campaigns with Ads Manager’s documented controls.

What should brands do about Your algorithm?

In our view, make every post clearly about a topic people would choose to follow, keep a consistent set of content themes, and judge results on comparable posts over several weeks. Meta has not said how much weight the new topic signals carry, so treat any change in reach as something to test, not assume.
