Meta’s “Choose an Audience for Each Ad Creative”: How Per-Creative Age and Gender Targeting Works

Meta Ads per-creative audience targeting explainer card from Gradezilla

Meta’s new “Choose an audience for each ad creative” setting lets you give each image or video in one ad set its own age range and gender. Meta announced it on 19 October 2026 for Marketing API partners. In Ads Manager, the setting’s description (as reported by Jon Loomer) says each ad is directed towards the selected audience but may also reach others likely to respond.

Key takeaways

  • What it is: a toggle that pairs each creative in an ad set with its own age range and gender, instead of setting demographics only at ad set level.
  • Launch: announced on Meta’s developer blog on 19 October 2026; Marketing API partners could see and test it from that day. Jon Loomer reported the toggle in Ads Manager a day later.
  • Not a hard wall: the Ads Manager text, as reported by Jon Loomer, says your ad may also reach others who are likely to respond.
  • Rules: Meta’s API reference requires an ad set minimum age of 18–25, a maximum age of 65 and all genders, and says it can’t be combined with Advantage+ audience.
  • Our view: it could let some advertisers merge demographic ad sets into one, but test it against your current setup first.

What is Meta’s “Choose an audience for each ad creative”?

Until now, age and gender lived at ad set level in Meta Ads. If you wanted one video for younger buyers and another for older buyers, the usual workaround was to build separate ad sets. The new setting moves that choice down to the creative. According to Meta’s developer announcement, when the toggle is on, you can create several ads within one ad set and pick the age range and gender that each creative suits best.

Meta gave two examples. A financial services advertiser might pair retirement-planning videos with people aged 50–65 while showing savings-account videos to all ages. A fashion retailer might pair images of women’s sweaters with women and images of men’s sweaters with men. In Meta’s API documentation the feature is called creative audience pairing, and each creative’s audience is called a persona.

This matters because most of Meta’s recent changes have pushed advertisers toward broader, AI-led targeting. PPC Land described the launch as a contrast with that push, since it gives manual demographic control, but only when Meta’s automated audience option is switched off.

When did Meta launch it, and who can use it?

Meta’s developer blog post, written by Graham Mahon and Mohamed Khalil, is dated Monday 19 October 2026 and says the option becomes visible to Marketing API partners from that day. In practice, that means tools built on Meta’s API can start supporting it. The post lists the ad set, ad and ad creative endpoints that are affected, but it does not name specific objectives, placements or markets.

On 20 October, Jon Loomer reported that the toggle was also appearing in Ads Manager. He wrote that it appeared to be on by default in Sales campaigns (once you click to further limit reach) and off by default for other objectives, and that he found no objective-based restrictions. New Meta features often reach accounts at different times, so if you don’t see it yet, it may still be rolling out.

How do you set an audience for each ad creative in Ads Manager?

Steps 1–3 are based on Jon Loomer’s walkthrough; steps 4–5 are our recommendations. Labels can change during a rollout, so treat the wording as a guide rather than exact menu names.

  1. Open the ad set and go to the Audience section. Click the option to further limit the reach of your ads, then switch on Choose an audience for each ad creative.
  2. Go to the ad. If you use the multi-media (flexible) format, upload at least one image or video, then open the media options (Edit or “customize media”) and choose an audience for each image or video.
  3. If you use a single image or video, look for the new Audience section under the media placement groups and set the age range and gender there.
  4. Leave creatives that suit everyone set to all ages and genders. Only narrow the ones that are clearly made for a specific group.
  5. Publish, then check results with the Age and Gender breakdowns in Ads Manager reporting to see where delivery actually went.

If you are still getting used to how campaigns, ad sets and ads relate, our guide to Meta ad sets vs ads explains which settings live at each level.

What are the rules and limitations?

Meta’s Marketing API reference for creative audience pairing sets out the requirements. They explain why some ad set targeting options lock when the toggle is on.

SettingRequirement (Meta API reference)
Ad set minimum ageBetween 18 and 25
Ad set maximum age65
Ad set genderAll genders; single-gender ad sets are not allowed
Creative minimum age18 or older, and not below the ad set’s minimum age
Creative maximum ageUp to 65
Creative genderMen, women or both (all genders if left empty)
Advantage+ audienceCannot be combined with this feature
Age and gender suggestionsCannot be combined with this feature
Ads with several images or videosSet an audience on each asset; an ad-level audience is then ignored

Jon Loomer saw the same logic in Ads Manager: while the toggle is on, you can’t restrict the ad set by age range (only a minimum age) or by gender. In other words, you keep the ad set open and do the narrowing on each creative.

Is it a hard targeting restriction or a suggestion?

This is the most important question, and Meta has not answered it in detail. The Ads Manager description quoted by Jon Loomer says: “Your ad will be directed towards your selected audience, but may also reach others who are likely to respond.” Loomer reads that as closer to an audience suggestion than a strict limit. PPC Land also noted that Meta has not said whether the persona restricts delivery or only signals a preference, and has not shared performance data.

In our view, the safest approach is to treat per-creative audiences as a strong signal. If a creative must never reach a certain group, for legal or brand reasons, check your breakdowns before relying on this setting.

How is it different from separate ad sets or Advantage+ audience?

ApproachWhere age and gender are setOur view: good forOur view: watch out for
Separate ad sets per age or genderAd set targetingStrict demographic control and clean reporting per groupBudget split across more ad sets, each needing its own learning data
Advantage+ audienceMeta’s AI, with your audience suggestionsBroad reach when you trust Meta to find buyersLess control over which creative reaches which group
Audience for each ad creativeOn each creative inside one open ad setOne ad set with different messages for different groupsCan’t be combined with Advantage+ audience; delivery may go beyond the chosen group

Budget structure also matters. If you are deciding between campaign and ad set budgets for a test like this, see our guide to CBO vs ABO in Meta Ads.

Who should use per-creative audiences?

In our view, the feature fits brands that already make different creative for different demographics. A few examples from our region:

  • Fashion stores in Riyadh, Jeddah or Beirut with separate men’s and women’s lines that currently run two ad sets.
  • Training and education providers that speak differently to university students and to working professionals in their 30s and 40s.
  • Services with life-stage messages, where one video speaks to young families and another to older customers.

There are two cautions. First, Social Media Today questioned whether restricting creative to certain audiences could affect advertisers trying to reach people buying gifts for others, with the holiday shopping season approaching. Second, PPC Land noted that it is unclear how the feature applies to special ad categories such as financial services, where age and gender targeting is normally limited. Meta has not clarified this yet.

How should you test it?

  1. Pick one campaign where you already split ad sets by age or gender and have steady conversion data.
  2. Keep your current structure as the control. Build one open ad set with the toggle on, using the same creatives with matching personas. Meta’s experiments tool or a clean A/B test keeps the comparison fair.
  3. Narrow only the creatives that are clearly made for one group; leave universal creatives open.
  4. Run the test long enough to exit learning and collect enough conversions to compare.
  5. Compare cost per result, then check the Age and Gender breakdowns to see whether delivery followed your personas.

What to do now

  • Check whether the toggle appears in your ad sets (Audience section) and note whether it is on by default in your Sales campaigns.
  • If it is on by default and you don’t plan to use it, review the setting so your ad set targeting works the way you expect.
  • List the creatives you already make for specific age or gender groups; these are your best test candidates.
  • If you use a third-party ads tool, ask whether it supports creative audience pairing through the Marketing API.
  • Plan a controlled test before the holiday season rather than switching every campaign at once.

Frequently asked questions

What does “Choose an audience for each ad creative” do in Meta Ads?

It lets you assign an age range and a gender to each image or video inside one ad set, so Meta can pair each creative with the people it suits best. Meta announced it on 19 October 2026 with examples such as showing retirement-planning videos to people aged 50–65.

Is the per-creative audience a hard restriction?

Meta has not described it as one. The Ads Manager text reported by Jon Loomer says your ad will be directed towards your selected audience but may also reach others who are likely to respond. In our view, treat it as a strong signal and check your age and gender breakdowns.

Can I use it with Advantage+ audience?

Not according to Meta’s Marketing API documentation, which says creative audience pairing cannot be combined with Advantage+ audience or with age and gender suggestions. Conflicting settings return an error in the API.

What ad set settings does it require?

Meta’s API reference says the ad set’s minimum age must be between 18 and 25, the maximum age must be 65, and the ad set must include all genders. You then narrow age and gender on each creative instead.

Is it available in Ads Manager or only in the API?

Meta’s developer post announced it for Marketing API partners from 19 October 2026. In a post on 20 October, Jon Loomer reported that the toggle was appearing in Ads Manager, on by default in Sales campaigns once you choose to further limit reach. New Meta features often reach accounts at different times, so your account may not show it yet.

Does it work with single-image ads and flexible multi-media ads?

Yes. For single-media ads the audience is set on the ad, and for ads with several images or videos you set an audience on each asset. In the API, per-asset settings override the ad-level setting.

Should I replace my separate age and gender ad sets with it?

In our view, test before you switch. Run your current structure against one ad set that uses per-creative audiences, compare cost per result and the demographic breakdowns, then decide based on your own data.
