AI Max for Search is a suite of AI targeting and creative features that you turn on inside an existing Google Ads Search campaign; it is not a new campaign type. It adds search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion. Google scheduled the automatic upgrade of two legacy setups for September 2026 and plans to migrate Dynamic Search Ads in February 2027.
Key takeaways
- What it is: a one-click layer inside Search campaigns, described by Google as a suite of targeting and creative features.
- Scheduled for September: Google said Search campaigns using campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets would be upgraded automatically between 1 and 30 September 2026.
- Next deadline: Dynamic Search Ads migrate automatically from 1 to 28 February 2027.
- New in October 2026: a preview of AI-generated ad copy before opting in, and three new reporting columns, both reported by Search Engine Land.
- Google’s own figure: 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. Treat it as a vendor number and test it.
What is AI Max for Search?
AI Max for Search is Google’s name for a group of AI features that sit on top of a normal Search campaign. Google’s help page calls it a comprehensive suite of targeting and creative features and says plainly that it is not a new campaign type. You switch it on in the settings of a Search campaign you already run.
Google announced it on 6 May 2025 in a post by Brian Burdick, Senior Director of Product Management for Google Ads, and said it would roll out to all advertisers globally in beta later that month. That matters for how you think about it: your keywords, ad groups, bid strategy and budget remain. AI Max changes which searches you can match and which headline, description and landing page each searcher sees.

How does AI Max for Search work?
According to Google’s help page, AI Max has two parts: search term matching, and an asset optimization panel that holds text customization and final URL expansion. Each one has its own switch.
| Feature | What it does | How you control it |
|---|---|---|
| Search term matching | Uses broad match and keywordless technology, plus signals from your assets and landing pages, to reach searches your keywords would miss. | On by default when AI Max is on; can be turned off in ad group settings. |
| Text customization | Writes headlines and descriptions tailored to the search, based on your existing ads, landing page and assets. Formerly called automatically created assets. | Campaign-level toggle; generated assets can be removed. |
| Final URL expansion | Sends the click to the page on your site that Google predicts is most relevant. | Campaign-level toggle; requires text customization; URL exclusions and inclusions limit it. |
| Locations of interest | Reaches people by geographic intent, including in keywordless matches. Google says it is exclusive to AI Max. | Set at ad group level. |
| Brand settings | Brand inclusions and exclusions decide which brand searches you appear on. | Inclusions at campaign and ad group level; exclusions at campaign level. |
Two details from the help page are easy to miss. First, when final URL expansion is on, pinned responsive search ad assets are not used if Google chooses a more relevant URL. Second, Google says AI Max will not be effective in a campaign that is limited by budget, and it shows an alert when that is the case.
Reporting changed too. The search terms report gains an “AI Max” match type and a source column that separates broad match expansion from keywordless matching. The landing pages report adds a “Selected by” column, and the asset report shows spend and conversions for generated assets.
What changed with AI Max in October 2026?
Two smaller updates were reported by Search Engine Land this week. Neither changes how AI Max works; both make it easier to see what it is doing.
A preview of AI-written copy before you opt in. On 8 October 2026, Search Engine Land reported that Google Ads is adding text customization asset previews. After you enter a final URL, Google analyzes the landing page and generates up to 10 sample headlines and descriptions in about 30 seconds, without your having to switch text customization on first. The previews appear in the Asset optimization section when you create or edit a Search campaign. Google says the feature supports all languages currently available for text customization and most business categories, with adult content excluded. The article adds a caution: these are examples, not necessarily the exact copy that will serve.
Three new reporting columns. On 7 October 2026, Search Engine Land reported that Google Ads is rolling out columns for Locations of interest, Optimized targeting and Brand inclusions, so you can see which campaigns use those settings. The update was spotted by Vivek Gupta and shared on LinkedIn; the article does not cite an official Google announcement, and it notes the columns may not yet appear in every account.
In our view, the preview is the more useful of the two for small advertisers. The main reason people hesitate over text customization is not knowing what Google will write in their name, and a 30-second sample answers part of that question before any money is spent.
Is AI Max for Search mandatory? The migration timeline
For most Search campaigns, AI Max is still optional. For three legacy features it is not. Google set out the schedule in a Google Ads Developers Blog post on 12 August 2026, which Search Engine Land covered on 14 August 2026.
| Date | What happens | Status on 11 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 August 2026 | Creating new campaign-level broad match and legacy automatically created assets setups was blocked in the interface, Google Ads Editor and the API. | Done |
| 1–30 September 2026 | Search campaigns using campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets were scheduled to be upgraded to AI Max automatically. | Scheduled window has passed |
| September 2026 | In-account notices invite advertisers to upgrade Dynamic Search Ads voluntarily. | Scheduled to start in September 2026 |
| 15 January 2027 | Reminder notification to accounts that still run legacy Dynamic Search Ads. | Upcoming |
| 1–28 February 2027 | Dynamic Search Ads are migrated automatically; creating new DSA ad groups is removed permanently. | Upcoming |
| Around September 2027 | Older API versions that still support the legacy entities reach their sunset. | Upcoming |
The migration does not switch every AI Max feature on. Per the Developers Blog, the settings depend on where the campaign came from:
| Legacy setup | Search term matching | Text customization | Final URL expansion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign-level broad match | On | Off | Off |
| Standalone automatically created assets | On | On | Off |
Existing brand inclusions and exclusions carry over. For Dynamic Search Ads, Google says unmigrated campaigns become standard Search ad groups with AI Max enabled once the February 2027 window runs.
Does AI Max actually improve results?
Google says advertisers who activate AI Max in Search campaigns typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, rising to 27% for campaigns that still rely mostly on exact and phrase match keywords. The footnote matters: this is Google internal data from 2025, and the 27% figure is based on non-retail advertisers whose campaigns took more than 70% of conversions or conversion value from exact or phrase match keywords.
The launch post also cites two advertisers. Google says L’Oréal saw a conversion rate twice as high at a 31% lower cost per conversion, and that MyConnect, an Australian utility connection service, got 16% more leads at a 13% lower cost per action. These are the vendor’s chosen examples; Search Engine Land’s guide to AI Max repeats them as case studies shared by Google, and none of the sources we reviewed offers independent verification.
In our view, the honest answer is “it depends on your account”. More reach is not the same as more profit, and a wider net of search terms can pull in clicks you would not have paid for. That is why the testing method below matters more than any average. If you are new to structured testing, our guide to A/B testing in digital marketing covers the basics.
How do you test AI Max safely?
- Check the budget first. Google says AI Max will not be effective in a campaign limited by budget.
- Run an experiment, not a switch. A Search Engine Land guide by Christine Askew recommends Google Ads experiments: choose “campaign features and settings”, then “AI Max for Search campaigns”. Traffic is split 50/50 between the AI Max arm and a control.
- Preview the copy. Use the new preview in the Asset optimization section to read sample headlines and descriptions before enabling text customization.
- Decide on final URL expansion deliberately. Search Engine Land’s 2025 guide noted it was on by default when you opt in. If only some pages should receive paid traffic, add URL exclusions or leave it off.
- Set brand controls. Add brand inclusions or exclusions so the wider matching stays inside the searches you want.
- Fix tracking templates. Google’s help page warns that templates without a compatible {lpurl} pattern can cause 404 errors on dynamically chosen landing pages.
- Read the reports weekly. Filter the search terms report by the AI Max match type and check the “Selected by” column in the landing pages report. Remove generated assets that are off-brand.
Whatever the result, judge it on conversions and cost per conversion rather than clicks. Our guide on how to measure campaign performance lists the metrics worth tracking.
What should advertisers do now?
- Open each Search campaign and check whether AI Max is already on. Campaigns that used campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets were scheduled for the September 2026 upgrade window.
- List every campaign that still uses Dynamic Search Ads and plan the move before 1 February 2027, so you choose the settings instead of receiving the defaults.
- If your campaign came from campaign-level broad match, consider adding exact match copies of your most important keywords. Google’s help page says that after the move, broad keywords are no longer treated as exact match in prioritization.
- Review landing pages. With final URL expansion, Google can send clicks to other pages on your site that it judges more relevant, unless you exclude them.
- If you use scripts or third-party tools, ask whether they still call the legacy campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets entities in the API.
- Look for the three new columns (Locations of interest, Optimized targeting, Brand inclusions) in your campaign table; they are still rolling out.
One note for advertisers in Lebanon and the Gulf: the sources above do not list which languages text customization supports, so we could not confirm how it behaves for Arabic campaigns. Use the preview on an Arabic landing page and read the output before you enable it. AI Max is one more example of platforms moving toward automation that plans and writes for you, a shift we explain in what agentic AI means and in our look at AI in SEO.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI Max for Search?
AI Max for Search is a set of AI-powered targeting and creative features that you switch on inside an existing Google Ads Search campaign. Google describes it as a suite of features, not a new campaign type. It combines search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion.
Is AI Max a new campaign type like Performance Max?
No. Google’s help page says AI Max is not a new campaign type. It is a setting inside a standard Search campaign, so your keywords, ad groups, bidding and budget stay where they are.
Is AI Max mandatory in Google Ads?
Only for some legacy setups. Google scheduled an automatic upgrade of Search campaigns that used campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets for 1 to 30 September 2026, and it plans to migrate Dynamic Search Ads from 1 to 28 February 2027. Other Search campaigns can still choose whether to turn AI Max on.
What happens to Dynamic Search Ads?
Dynamic Search Ads keep serving for now. Google says a reminder goes to affected accounts on 15 January 2027, automatic migration runs from 1 to 28 February 2027, and creating new DSA ad groups is then removed permanently. Unmigrated DSA campaigns become standard Search ad groups with AI Max enabled.
Can I preview the ad copy AI Max will write?
Yes, according to Search Engine Land’s report of 8 October 2026. Google Ads can generate up to 10 sample headlines and descriptions from your landing page before you opt into text customization. They are examples, not necessarily the exact copy Google will serve.
How much does AI Max improve results?
Google’s own figure is that advertisers who activate AI Max typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. That number comes from Google internal data from 2025, and the sources we reviewed offer no independent verification, so test it in your own account.
Can I use AI Max without final URL expansion?
Yes. Text customization and final URL expansion are separate toggles in the asset optimization panel, and search term matching can be turned off at ad group level. Final URL expansion needs text customization to be on, but not the other way round.
How should I test AI Max safely?
A Search Engine Land guide by Christine Askew recommends a Google Ads experiment rather than a full switch. Choose the campaign features and settings experiment type, then AI Max for Search campaigns, which splits traffic 50/50 between an AI Max arm and a control.
