How to boost an Instagram post in 2026, including the new Instagram Live boost - Gradezilla guide

To boost an Instagram post, use a professional account, tap Boost on the post, pick a goal, an audience, a daily budget and a duration, then add payment and submit it for ad review. The post then runs as an ad that reaches people beyond your followers. Since September 2026, creators can also boost Instagram Live videos straight from the live composer.

Key takeaways

  • Boosting turns an existing post, Reel, Story or carousel into an ad without opening Ads Manager. You need a Creator or Business account and a payment method.
  • You choose a goal (profile visits, website visits, messages or, in newer app versions, a mix of actions), an automatic or custom audience, a daily budget and a duration.
  • New: Instagram now lets creators boost livestreams. The ad runs only while you are live, and Instagram recommends scheduling it at least two hours ahead (Social Media Today).
  • Most failed boosts come from a personal account, copyrighted music, account restrictions or ad-policy issues, and each has a clear fix.
  • In our view, boost posts that already perform well organically, and move to Ads Manager when you need conversion tracking, retargeting or A/B tests.

What does boosting a post on Instagram mean?

Boosting means paying to show a post you have already published to more people, as an ad. The post stays on your profile with its likes and comments, and the boosted version is shown as an ad to people who don’t follow you yet. According to Shopify’s guide, you can boost static posts, carousels, Reels and Stories. Instagram has now added live videos to that list.

Boosting is the lightweight version of Meta advertising. It lives inside the Instagram app, takes a few taps and offers a short list of goals. Ads Manager is the full tool, with more objectives, placements, tracking and testing. We compare the two in detail in Boosting vs Ads Manager: the clear difference.

What do you need before you can boost an Instagram post?

  • A professional account. Personal accounts can’t boost. Switch to a Creator or Business account for free in your settings (Manychat, Shopify).
  • A payment method. Add a card in Instagram or use a linked Meta ad account (Manychat).
  • Admin access to the linked Facebook Page, if your Instagram account is connected to one. Without Page admin rights, boosting can fail (Hootsuite).
  • A post that follows Meta’s advertising policies. Every boost is reviewed before it runs.

How to boost an Instagram post: step by step

These are the steps in the Instagram app. Button names can change slightly between app versions and markets.

  1. Open the post. Go to your profile and open the post, Reel or carousel you want to promote.
  2. Tap Boost. Tap the Boost button below the post, or open Ad tools and choose a post.
  3. Choose a goal. Pick what you want people to do: visit your profile, visit your website or send you a message. Manychat notes that newer app versions also let you choose a mix of actions.
  4. Choose an audience. Use the automatic (suggested) audience, which Instagram builds from people similar to your followers, or create your own by location, age, gender and interests.
  5. Set the budget and duration. Enter a daily budget and how many days the boost should run. The screen updates the estimated reach as you change them.
  6. Review and add payment. Check the ad preview, the audience and the total spend, then add or confirm your payment method.
  7. Submit. Meta reviews the boost against its ad policies. Once approved, it starts running and you can follow results in the post’s insights.

On desktop, Meta Business Suite also has a Boost post button next to eligible posts.

Which boost goal should you choose?

The goal list in the Boost flow is short compared with Ads Manager. Here is how we suggest matching each goal to a business need:

GoalBest forWhat to measure
More profile visitsNew accounts, creators and brands that want followers and awarenessProfile visits, new follows
More website visitsOnline stores, landing pages, course or event sign-up pagesLink clicks and what visitors do on your site
More messagesService businesses and shops that close sales in DMs or WhatsAppConversations started and how many turn into customers

In our view, the messages goal is often the most practical for small businesses in Lebanon and the Gulf, where many customers prefer to ask a question in DMs before they buy. Whichever goal you pick, judge the boost by the action it was meant to drive, not by likes. Our guides to views vs impressions and impressions vs reach explain which numbers matter.

How much does it cost to boost a post on Instagram?

There is no fixed price. You decide the daily budget and the number of days, and Instagram shows the estimated reach before you pay. Shopify reports that Meta advises starting with at least $5 per day for six days. In our view, that gives the delivery system enough time to learn. What you actually pay per click or message depends on your audience, your market, the season and how well the post performs.

One practical detail for iPhone users: in February 2024, Meta said that boosts paid for through the Instagram and Facebook iOS apps would include Apple’s 30% service charge. Meta also said advertisers could avoid it by adding funds on desktop or mobile web and then boosting from any device. Check the payment screen before you confirm, because the fee depends on how and where you pay.

Can you boost a live video on Instagram now?

Yes. On 30 September 2026, Social Media Today reported that Instagram added an option to boost livestreams, and MediaPost covered the same update the next day. Here is how it works, according to Instagram’s announcement as reported by Social Media Today (MediaPost confirms the placements and the two-hour advice):

  • Tap Boost in the livestream composer before you go live.
  • Pick a target audience or use the suggested audience, and set a start and end time.
  • The live video itself is the ad creative, and it can appear in Feed, Stories and Reels.
  • The boost runs only while you are broadcasting, so it reaches people who are active on the app at that moment.
  • You can launch the boost just before going live or schedule it. Instagram recommends scheduling it at least two hours before the stream to reduce ad delivery delays.

Live broadcasts could already be promoted through Ads Manager, so the change is speed. In our view, it fits product launches, Q&A sessions, live shopping and webinars where the value is in people joining at the same time.

Why can’t I boost my post on Instagram?

If the Boost button is missing or greyed out, one of these is usually the reason (Hootsuite, Social Media Today):

ReasonHow to fix it
Personal accountSwitch to a free Creator or Business account in settings
Copyrighted music in the Reel or postReplace the audio with a boost-eligible track. Since November 2024 Instagram lets you swap the song instead of deleting the post
Not an admin of the linked Facebook PageAsk the Page owner for admin access
Ad rejected for a policy issueEdit the content or choose another post, or request a review in Account Quality
Account restrictedOpen Account Quality and follow the steps under “What you can do”
New accountHootsuite reports a 30-day minimum account age for boosting. Wait until the account is 30 days old
Spending limit reachedRaise the account spending limit in Meta billing settings

Boost or Ads Manager: when should you switch?

In our experience, the two tools compare like this:

You want to…BoostAds Manager
Promote one good post quicklyYesPossible, but slower
Track purchases or leads on your websiteLimitedYes, with the Meta pixel and conversion objectives
Retarget website visitors or customer listsNoYes
Test several creatives or audiences against each otherNoYes
Run partnership ads with creatorsLimited (needs partnership access)Yes

A simple rule we teach: boost to learn which content resonates, then rebuild the winners as proper campaigns in Ads Manager. If you are new to campaign structure, start with Meta ad set vs ad and Meta’s new AI business assistant.

Does boosting posts on Instagram work?

In our experience, boosting works when three things line up: the post already performs well organically, the goal matches what you want (profile visits, site visits or messages), and the budget runs long enough to learn. It works badly when people boost a weak post hoping that money will fix it. Strong hooks matter even more in paid reach, so our guide to making a Reel go viral and our breakdown of when to post on Instagram are useful before you spend.

What to do now: a quick boosting checklist

  • Confirm your account is a Creator or Business account and that you are an admin of any linked Facebook Page.
  • Pick a post from the last 30 days with above-average saves, shares or comments.
  • Check the audio: replace any track that isn’t boost-eligible.
  • Choose one goal and write down the number you will judge it by.
  • Start with a modest daily budget for several days rather than one large one-day spend.
  • On iPhone, check the payment screen for Apple’s service charge, or add funds on the web.
  • Planning a live? Schedule the live boost at least two hours before you go live.
  • After the boost ends, compare cost per result with your other posts and move the winners into Ads Manager.

Frequently asked questions

Is boosting a post on Instagram free?

No. A boost is a paid ad: you set a daily budget and a duration, and Meta charges your payment method while the boost runs. The app shows an estimated reach for the budget you choose before you submit.

Why can’t I boost my post on Instagram?

The most common reasons are a personal (not professional) account, copyrighted music in the post, a restricted or very new account, a reached spending limit, or content that breaks Meta’s ad policies. Switch to a Creator or Business account, swap the audio for a boost-eligible track, and check Account Quality for restrictions.

Can you boost a collab post on Instagram?

Yes, in many cases. With account-level partnership ad access, which the brand requests in Ads Manager’s Partnership Ads Hub and the creator approves in the Instagram app, a brand that co-authored a collab post can boost it (Reshift Media). If Boost doesn’t appear, run the post as a partnership ad in Ads Manager.

Can you boost an Instagram Live?

Yes. Since late September 2026, Instagram lets creators boost a livestream from the live composer. The live video becomes the ad, it can appear in Feed, Stories and Reels, and it runs only while you are broadcasting. Instagram recommends scheduling the boost at least two hours before you go live.

How long does Instagram take to approve a boosted post?

Meta reviews every boost against its advertising policies before it runs. Shopify says a typical wait is about 24 hours and Manychat says it can take up to 24 hours, so submit time-sensitive boosts early.

Can I edit a post after boosting it?

Shopify’s guide says you can’t change the original post once it is boosted, so check the caption, link and visuals before you submit. Shopify notes you can adjust the daily budget and duration of the boost, and Manychat adds that you can pause it.

Does boosting posts on Instagram work?

It works for simple goals such as more profile visits, website visits or messages from a post that already performs well organically. For sales, retargeting or detailed testing, Meta Ads Manager gives you far more control than the Boost button.
