Meta Ads Manager now has a creative breakdown that shows how each image, video and text variation inside an ad performs. In the Breakdown menu, choose Creative, then Media, for images and videos, or Dynamic creative element for text. Social Media Today reported the feature on 27 October 2026. Carousel and collection displays are excluded, and the reports give no country rollout schedule.
Key takeaways
- What’s new: a Meta Ads creative breakdown that reports results for each image, video and text variation inside one ad.
- Where: Ads Manager › Breakdown › Creative › Media (images and videos) and Breakdown › Dynamic creative element (text).
- Limits: no media reporting for Show as carousel or Show as collection, and some custom conversion types such as Donate and Subscribe aren’t covered.
- Read it carefully: Meta’s AI gives more delivery to assets it expects to win, so the breakdown is a signal, not a controlled test.
- Do this week: pull the breakdown for your biggest flexible or multi-asset ads, and replace assets that are clearly weaker after meaningful spend.
What is the Meta Ads creative breakdown?
When you give Meta several images, videos and text options in one ad, its delivery system mixes and matches them across placements and people. Until now, Ads Manager mainly reported results at the ad level, so it was harder to tell which asset was doing the work. According to Social Media Today, Meta has added a Breakdown option that shows the performance of individual creative elements, so advertisers get more guidance on what is and isn’t working.
Meta’s own description, as quoted by Social Media Today, is that selecting Media lets you see “the performance of how your images and videos delivered as single media.” Text variations get their own breakdown too.
The update matters most for ads that hold many assets. Jon Loomer Digital notes that a Flexible ad can take up to 10 images or videos, or up to three creative groups of 10 each, and that each creative group allows five primary texts, five headlines and five descriptions. With that many combinations, ad-level numbers hide a lot.
How do you find the creative breakdown in Ads Manager?
Social Samosa describes the paths in the Breakdown menu; Common Thread Collective adds that you start from the Ads tab:
- Open Ads Manager and go to the Ads level of the campaign you want to review.
- Open the Breakdown menu.
- For images and videos, select Creative, then Media. Each asset appears with its own results.
- For copy, select Dynamic creative element, then choose the text option you want to compare.
- To review assets you already removed from an ad, use the Ad delivery breakdown.
- We suggest sorting by your main cost metric, such as cost per purchase or cost per lead, and comparing each asset with the ad’s average.
Common Thread Collective, an ecommerce agency, says no opt-in is needed and lists spend, impressions, clicks, CTR, purchases, CPA and ROAS among the metrics you can read per asset. That is the agency’s account; Meta has not published those details in the sources we read, so check what your own account shows.
What does each breakdown show, and what are the limits?
| Breakdown path | What it shows | Known limits |
|---|---|---|
| Breakdown › Creative › Media | Results for each image and video, counted as single media | Excludes Show as carousel and Show as collection |
| Breakdown › Dynamic creative element (text) | Results for each text variation, reported separately from media | Some custom conversion types, such as Donate and Subscribe, aren’t covered |
| Breakdown › Ad delivery | Results for media assets that were removed from an ad | Only helps after you have edited the ad |
Note: the custom conversion limit (Donate, Subscribe) applies to element-level reporting in general, according to Social Media Today and Common Thread Collective.
Two more points are worth knowing. Meta hasn’t published a country rollout schedule in the sources we read; Common Thread Collective says the breakdown is live for all accounts, so check your own Ads Manager. The agency also says standard events such as Purchase, Add to Cart and Initiate Checkout are supported, and notes that how far back the data goes depends on your account’s retention settings.
Is a creative breakdown the same as A/B testing in Meta Ads?
No. In our view, this is the most important thing to understand before you act on the numbers. Meta’s delivery system shifts impressions toward the assets it predicts will perform better. Common Thread Collective makes the same point: the breakdown reflects delivery optimization, not a controlled split test. In our view, an image that received little spend hasn’t necessarily “lost”; it may simply never have had a fair chance.
| Question | Creative breakdown | A/B test |
|---|---|---|
| How is spend split? | Unevenly; Meta favours predicted winners | Evenly, by design |
| Best for | Spotting strong and weak assets inside a live ad | Proving that one version beats another |
| Setup | None beyond opening the Breakdown menu | A separate test with its own budget |
| Risk | Over-reading assets with little delivery | Slower and costs more budget |
A practical rule in our view: only judge an asset once it has received enough delivery to produce a meaningful number of results (Common Thread Collective, for example, suggests waiting for at least 50 purchases per asset before judging on CPA alone), and avoid editing ads constantly while Meta is still in the learning phase.
How should you use the breakdown to improve your ads?
Here is the routine we suggest for small businesses and marketers in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf who run a handful of multi-asset ads:
- Start with your biggest spenders. Open the breakdown for the two or three ads that take most of your budget.
- Read media and text separately. A strong video can hide weak copy, and the other way round.
- Compare with the ad average. Flag assets whose cost per result is clearly worse than the ad’s overall figure after meaningful spend.
- Replace, don’t just remove. When you pause a weak asset, add a new variation built on what the strong ones have in common: hook, format, offer framing or language.
- Note what wins per audience. Meta recently let advertisers set an age range and gender for each creative in an ad set, as Social Samosa notes. If you use that option, read the breakdown with it in mind. Our guide to choosing an audience for each ad creative explains it.
- Confirm big decisions with a test. If a result will change your whole creative direction, run a proper A/B test first.
Why is Meta adding creative-level reporting now?
Social Media Today places the update within Meta’s wider push toward AI-powered ad tools. Meta has removed some targeting options, such as detailed targeting, so its AI can choose audiences, yet it still relies on advertisers to decide which creative should reach which audience. In our view, per-asset reporting is the natural partner to that shift: if creative is the main lever you still control, you need to see which pieces of it work. Our explainers on Meta Andromeda and Advantage+ Creative cover the AI side of that picture.
What to do now: a short checklist
- Open Breakdown › Creative › Media on your top multi-asset ad and note the best and worst assets.
- Open Breakdown › Dynamic creative element and compare your text variations.
- Check whether any ads use Show as carousel or Show as collection, since those won’t appear in media reporting.
- Write down which hooks, formats and messages the strong assets share, and brief your next creatives around them.
- Don’t pause assets after a day or two of low delivery; wait for meaningful results.
- Use an A/B test for decisions that change your whole creative strategy.
- Review the breakdown on a regular schedule rather than reacting to daily swings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Meta Ads creative breakdown?
It is a reporting option in Ads Manager’s Breakdown menu that splits an ad’s results by its individual creative elements. You can see how each image or video performed as single media, and how each text variation performed. Social Media Today reported the feature on 27 October 2026.
How do I see image and video performance in Meta Ads Manager?
Open the Breakdown menu in Ads Manager, choose Creative, then Media. Each image and video in the ad gets its own row of results. Assets you removed from an ad can be reviewed through the Ad delivery breakdown.
How do I see which ad text performs best?
Open the Breakdown menu and choose Dynamic creative element, then pick the text option you want to compare, such as primary text or headline. Each variation then shows its own results. Text and media are reported separately.
Which ads don’t show in the creative breakdown?
Media reporting excludes ads that use the Show as carousel or Show as collection display options. Social Media Today also reports that results for some custom conversion types, such as Donate and Subscribe, are not covered.
Is the creative breakdown the same as an A/B test?
No. Meta’s delivery system gives more impressions to the assets it predicts will perform better, so spend is not split evenly. Use the breakdown to spot strong and weak assets, and use a proper A/B test when you need a controlled comparison.
Is the Meta Ads creative breakdown available in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia?
The reports we read don’t give a country rollout schedule. Common Thread Collective, an ecommerce agency, says it is live for all accounts, but Meta has not confirmed that publicly in the sources we checked. Open the Breakdown menu in your own Ads Manager to check.
How many images and text variations can one Meta ad hold?
Jon Loomer’s guide to the Flexible ad format says one ad can take up to 10 images or videos, or more with creative groups (up to three groups of 10). Each creative group can hold up to five primary texts, five headlines and five descriptions. That is why per-asset reporting matters.
