Meta Advantage+ Creative and the 30 October AI Terms: What Advertisers Must Check Now

Meta Advantage+ creative and the 30 October 2026 AI terms: what advertisers must check

From 30 October 2026, Meta’s updated Commercial Terms reportedly make advertisers “solely responsible” for anything Meta’s AI features create or change in their ads, including features Meta turns on itself. That is Adweek’s reading of a new “AI Features” section. If you run Meta ads, the practical response is to check your Meta Advantage+ creative settings ad by ad before that date.

Key takeaways

  • Date: Meta’s updated Commercial Terms take effect on 30 October 2026. Continuing to run ads after notice counts as accepting them, according to PPC Land.
  • What’s new: Adweek reports an “AI Features” section that puts “any and all risks” of AI-made changes on the advertiser, including features Meta switches on itself.
  • Meta’s position: Meta told Adweek it is folding its generative AI ad terms into its main terms, and that advertisers can turn off individual Advantage+ features in Ads Manager at any time.
  • The catch: enhancements are set per ad. Ads Uploader reports there is no account-level switch, so new, duplicated or imported ads can start from Meta’s defaults again.
  • Your move: audit live ads, decide which enhancements you accept, and use Advanced preview and “Review defaults” before you publish anything new.

What is changing in Meta’s terms on 30 October?

Adweek reported on 22 October 2026 that Meta’s revised Commercial Terms, which take effect on 30 October, add a new “AI Features” section. According to Adweek, the section makes advertisers “solely responsible” for anything Meta’s AI features create or change, including features Meta turns on itself. The terms say these features “may make mistakes and may not always produce accurate, complete, or suitable results,” and that “any and all risks” fall on the advertiser.

Under the earlier wording, Adweek says, advertisers carried responsibility for AI output only when they chose to use Meta’s AI tools. The old text said: “You may choose to use the Ad Creative AIs in your sole discretion.”

PPC Land notes that continuing to run ads after notice of an update counts as acceptance, with no signature or click needed. Adweek reports that an advertiser who does not accept the terms “may stop all access or use” of Meta’s products for business purposes.

Meta’s response, as reported by Adweek: it is folding its existing generative AI ad terms into its main ad terms, and advertisers can turn off individual Advantage+ features in Ads Manager at any time. Meta did not directly say whether advertisers are liable for AI features they never turned on. Neither we nor PPC Land could read the full AI section directly, so treat the quoted wording as reported, not final.

What is Meta Advantage+ creative?

Meta Advantage+ creative is the set of automatic “enhancements” Meta can apply to an ad’s image, video, text and layout when it serves the ad. Some only rearrange what you supplied. Others generate new material, such as backgrounds, images, translations or text.

Ads Uploader, which sells a tool for setting these options at launch, counted 31 enhancements in Meta’s Help Center as of 30 September 2026: 17 labelled as AI and 14 not. It reports that a “standard” set is on by default: Add Overlays, Visual Touch-ups, Text Improvements and Relevant Comments for single-image ads, and the same minus overlays for single-video ads. These are a vendor’s counts and readings of Meta’s documentation, so check your own Ads Manager.

EnhancementWhat it changesAI-labelled in Meta’s list?Default, as reported
Visual touch-upsAdjusts aspect ratio, brightness and contrast; Ads Uploader says it can also AI-expand images, generating new pixels at the edgesYesPart of the standard set (image and video)
Text improvementsMoves your headline, primary text or description to where it fits betterYesPart of the standard set (image and video)
Add overlaysShows text you supplied as an overlay on a single imageYesPart of the standard set (single image)
Relevant commentsShows a relevant comment below the adNoPart of the standard set; on by default in the API
TranslationsTranslates ad text, voiceover and text within imagesYesNot stated
Image and background generationCreates new image variations; separately, generates new backgrounds for catalog product imagesYesNot stated
Add musicAdds music to placements such as Reels and StoriesYesNot stated
Dynamic descriptionDecides whether to show a carousel card’s descriptionNoOn by default in the API

Table sources: Jon Loomer (updated March 2025) and Ads Uploader for descriptions; Ads Uploader (updated 19 October 2026) for labels and defaults. Ads Uploader also notes Meta can switch an enhancement on when it predicts a performance gain.

Why are advertisers worried about Meta’s AI edits?

Because brands say they have already seen changes they did not ask for. Adweek’s 22 October report includes these accounts:

  • Bookshop.org said an account update opted it into a generative AI feature, and Meta added an AI-generated illustration to its human-made ad without its knowledge. It has since turned off all of Meta’s AI ad features.
  • Exverus, a digital agency, reported added sitelinks, translated copy, and AI images and carousels built from brands’ photos, sometimes on campaigns where the advertiser hadn’t enabled those features. It pulled live ads to remove the changes.
  • AdCellerant said it turns off Meta’s default AI automation on every campaign.

Earlier, in June 2026, REI told Fast Company that Meta had “auto-enrolled us in an AI personalization tool” that altered a bike photo in an Instagram ad, as PPC Land reported. The altered image showed an extra set of handlebars and a missing crank arm, and the ad ran for about a week before REI removed it.

Emarketer analyst Asa Hiken summed up the risk to Adweek: “It’s the brand that stands to lose here,” because people may assume the brand chose to use AI. In our view, that risk is highest for regulated sectors (health, finance, real estate) and for brands whose ads must match approved product photos exactly.

How do you turn off Meta Advantage+ creative enhancements?

Meta says you can turn off individual Advantage+ features in Ads Manager at any time. Exverus told Adweek that many options sit in collapsed menus and that enhancements still apply unless you uncheck each one. Ads Uploader describes the current Ads Manager path like this:

  1. New ad: in Ad setup, open Ad creative, click Set up creative, then go to Enhancements and switch off each one you don’t want.
  2. Open Advanced preview: click Expand and check the Advantage+ creative tab. Ads Uploader notes that some enhancements can only be turned off there and don’t appear in the Enhancements step.
  3. Click “Review defaults” (next to Advanced preview) before publishing, to catch anything Meta switched on.
  4. Live ads: select the ad in the Ads tab, click Edit, then Edit in the Advantage+ creative section. In Advanced preview, the All optimizations toggle switches every enhancement off for that ad. Editing a live ad can send it back through review.
  5. Account setting: in Advertising settings, under Creating ads, click Creative features; unticking “Test new creative features” (not shown to all advertisers) stops features still in testing from being applied. Ads Uploader says it does not turn off enhancements that are already generally available, and it does not change published ads.

If you launch through the Marketing API, Ads Uploader says each feature is switched off by setting its enroll_status to OPT_OUT in creative_features_spec.

Should you turn off every Meta Advantage+ creative enhancement?

Not necessarily. Advertisers in Adweek’s report are split. Some buyers say they consistently turn off Meta’s Advantage+, while Go Fish Digital said it would not advise clients to pull back on Meta during Q4. Jon Loomer, a long-time Meta ads educator, wrote (in a guide last updated in March 2025) that he is “generally okay turning on these optimizations by default” and that the one he will “sometimes turn off is the image template.”

In our view, a sensible middle path is to sort enhancements into two groups:

  • Generative changes (image and background generation, text generation, translations): keep these off unless you have reviewed sample outputs and accept that, under the new terms as reported, the result is your responsibility.
  • Layout and format changes (relevant comments, text placement, and visual touch-ups, noting that touch-ups can AI-expand images): test them against a control ad, and keep them only if results improve and the output still looks like your brand.

For Arabic ads, check translations and any added text closely. A machine edit that reads fine in English can change tone or meaning in Arabic, and your customers will see it as your message.

What about the website crawling clause?

The same update includes a clause on crawling business websites. Social Media Today reported on 18 October that Meta revised the wording after critics, including legal experts, raised concerns about scraping. Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts told The Verge that the crawling terms “only applied to our ads and business products” and that “content owners can use robots.txt to signal their preferences.”

PPC Land checked Meta’s preview on 18 October and reported that a sentence allowing Meta to use crawled content to “train” its products was still there word for word. It also notes that Meta’s crawler uses one robots.txt token for both training and indexing, so a site can’t block one purpose and allow the other. If this matters to your business, read the final text before 30 October and get legal advice for your situation.

What should advertisers do before 30 October?

  • List every live ad and open its Advantage+ creative settings in Advanced preview.
  • Turn off the generative enhancements you haven’t approved, ad by ad.
  • Check duplicated and imported ads. Settings are per creative and can reset to Meta’s defaults.
  • Note the separate product browsing change: Meta turns product browsing on for existing ads on 28 October, per PPC Land. See our product browsing guide.
  • Write a short internal rule: who approves AI changes, and which ad types (regulated, price-sensitive, exact product photos) never get them.
  • If you manage ads for clients, tell them about the change in writing and agree who reviews AI edits.

Frequently asked questions

When do Meta’s new Commercial Terms take effect?

On 30 October 2026. According to PPC Land, continuing to run ads after notice of the update counts as accepting it, with no signature or click needed.

Am I responsible for changes Meta’s AI makes to my ads?

According to Adweek’s reading of the new “AI Features” section, yes: advertisers are “solely responsible” for what Meta’s AI features create or change, including features Meta turns on itself. Meta did not directly address that point when asked. We could not read the full text ourselves, so check the final terms.

What is Meta Advantage+ creative?

It is a set of automatic enhancements Meta can apply to an ad’s image, video, text and layout, from brightness tweaks to AI-generated backgrounds and translations. Ads Uploader counted 31 enhancements in Meta’s Help Center as of 30 September 2026, 17 of them labelled as AI.

How do I turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements?

Open the ad’s creative settings, go to Enhancements and switch off what you don’t want, then check the Advantage+ creative tab in Advanced preview and click “Review defaults” before publishing. For live ads, the All optimizations toggle in Advanced preview switches every enhancement off for that ad. Editing a live ad can send it back through review.

Is there one setting that turns them off for my whole account?

Ads Uploader reports there isn’t. Unticking “Test new creative features” stops features still in testing, but not enhancements that are already generally available, so you need to check each ad.

Should I stop advertising on Meta because of the new terms?

Agencies quoted by Adweek disagree: some turn off Meta’s AI automation on every campaign, while Go Fish Digital would not advise clients to pull back during Q4. In our view, controlling your enhancement settings is the practical first step for most businesses.

Does the update let Meta crawl my website?

The terms include a crawling clause. Meta says it applies only to its ads and business products and that robots.txt preferences still apply, but PPC Land found a training sentence still in the preview on 18 October. Read the final text and get legal advice if this affects you.
