Meta Ads Placements: Manual Controls Are Being Removed. What Advertisers Can Still Do

Meta Ads placements: manual controls removed for Sales, Leads, Engagement and App campaigns, and what advertisers can still control

Meta ads placements can no longer be chosen manually at the ad set level for Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion campaigns. Meta’s Business Help Centre says these objectives now rely on automatic placement, and the change is rolling out gradually. Awareness and Traffic campaigns keep manual placements for now. You can still shape where ads run with account-level exclusions, placement value rules, per-placement creative and brand-safety tools.

Key takeaways

  • What changed: for Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion campaigns, you no longer pick placements in the ad set. Meta’s help page says this, as reported on 12–13 October 2026.
  • Not affected (for now): Awareness and Traffic campaigns still allow manual placements.
  • Rollout: gradual. Meta says the feature “may not be available to you yet”, so accounts can look different.
  • What you still control: account-level exclusions (now set per objective), placement value rules, different media per placement, and inventory filters and block lists.
  • In our view: creative built for every placement and clean conversion data now matter more than placement toggles.

What changed in Meta Ads placements?

Placements are the spots where your ads can appear across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network: Feed, Stories, Reels, search results, in-stream video and more. Until recently, advertisers could untick placements in each ad set. That is the control Meta is now removing for most performance objectives.

The first signs appeared in August 2026. PPC Land reported on 26 August, citing a practitioner’s LinkedIn post, that some advertisers were losing the placements control in Ads Manager, while Meta’s help pages still described manual selection. On 12 October 2026, Social Media Today reported Meta’s updated placement guidance, and on 13 October Relevant Audience documented the wording of Meta’s Business Help Centre page: for Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales, “you no longer choose placements manually at the ad set level.”

Meta’s page is undated and says the feature “is being rolled out gradually and may not be available to you yet.” So if you still see the old placement checkboxes, your account simply may not have the change yet.

Why is Meta removing manual placements?

Meta has not published a single explanation for this change in the sources we reviewed. In our view, the direction is clear: Meta keeps handing more delivery decisions to its AI systems, from audiences to creative. Meta’s own figures say Advantage+ placements delivered an 11.7% lower cost per action (its Advantage+ placements help page, cited by PPC Land) and a 10% lower cost per result (its updated placement-settings page, cited by Relevant Audience). Both come from Meta’s own experiments, with no published details, and are not independent results.

Social Media Today expects that all Meta ads will eventually lose manual placement control. That is analysis, not an announcement. It also fits what we covered in our explainers on Meta Andromeda and on choosing an audience for each ad creative: Meta wants the system, not the advertiser, to decide who sees which ad and where.

In our view, the bigger risk is not cost but brand fit. Some businesses in Lebanon and the Gulf have good reasons to avoid certain placements, for example a premium brand that does not want to appear on low-quality Audience Network apps, or a lead-generation advertiser whose Messenger or right-column leads are weaker. Those advertisers now have to use the remaining tools carefully.

What can you still control in Meta Ads placements?

Meta’s help page points advertisers to three main alternatives, plus partnership ads, according to Social Media Today and Relevant Audience. We’ve added a fourth tool, brand-safety controls, which PPC Land covers. Here is how they compare:

ControlWhere you set itWhat it doesLimits
Account-level placement exclusionsAd account settings (account controls)Excludes placements such as Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and the Facebook right columnApplies to every campaign in the account with that objective; Relevant Audience says exclusions can now be set per objective
Placement value rulesCreated in your advertising settings (per Jon Loomer), then applied to the campaign or ad setRaises or lowers your bid for specific placements based on how much their conversions are worth to youBid cuts capped at 90%, so a placement is weakened but not blocked (PPC Land)
Media per placementIn the ad, during setupUp to ten images or videos in one ad, with aspect ratio, text, URL and delivery settings customised per assetRelevant Audience says ads won’t deliver in placements without supported media
Brand-safety toolsBrand safety and suitability settingsInventory filters and block listsAccount-wide, not per campaign (PPC Land)

Meta’s fourth alternative is narrower: with partnership ads, Meta says you can choose the media and text and limit where a partner’s post appears, as reported by Social Media Today.

How do placement value rules work?

Value rules let you tell Meta that conversions from a placement are worth more or less to your business. Meta then bids higher or lower in that placement. According to PPC Land, a rule set can hold up to 10 rules, each with up to two criteria (such as age, gender, location, device platform or placement), and bid adjustments range from a 1,000% increase to a 90% decrease. When a person matches several rules, only the first matching rule applies, so order matters.

Jon Loomer describes the setup like this (menus can differ by account):

  1. Open your advertising settings. If your account has access, Value rules appears at the top.
  2. Create a rule set and choose Placement as the criterion.
  3. Tick the placements you want to adjust, such as Instagram Feed or Audience Network.
  4. Set the percentage increase or decrease for each rule.
  5. Select that rule set when you create the campaign. Jon Loomer’s walkthrough shows Sales and App promotion campaigns, and availability may differ by account.

In our view, value rules are a scalpel, not a switch. Start with one rule for your weakest placement, lower it moderately, and compare cost per result and lead quality over at least two weeks before going further.

How should advertisers in Lebanon and the Gulf adapt?

The practical answer is to shift effort from where ads run to what runs there. These are our recommendations, based on the controls Meta still offers:

  • Build creative for every placement. Prepare vertical (9:16) assets for Stories and Reels plus feed formats, so Meta never has to crop or stretch your ad. Our guide on the difference between a Meta ad set and an ad explains where each setting lives.
  • Read the placement breakdown. In Ads Manager, break results down by placement and compare cost per result and lead quality, not only clicks.
  • Use exclusions only where you have a reason. Account-level exclusions affect every campaign of that objective, so document why you excluded each placement.
  • Feed the algorithm better signals. When Meta decides placements, the quality of your conversion data matters more. Optimise for the result you really want, and keep your Pixel and Conversions API clean.
  • Give changes time. Big edits can reset delivery. Our explainer on the Meta Ads learning phase covers how to avoid restarting it.
  • Keep Traffic and Awareness in mind. If a campaign truly needs tight placement control, those objectives still allow it for now, but they optimise for different results.

What to do now: a quick checklist

  • Check whether your account already shows the change in a Sales or Leads ad set.
  • Export a placement breakdown for the last 30–90 days before your settings change.
  • Review account-level exclusions for each objective you use.
  • Add 9:16 and feed versions to every active ad.
  • Set up inventory filters and block lists if brand safety matters to you.
  • Test one placement value rule on a Sales campaign, then compare results.
  • Read Meta’s new commercial terms and our note on Advantage+ creative and AI terms, since more automation means more AI-made decisions on your ads.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still choose placements manually in Meta Ads?

For Awareness and Traffic campaigns, yes, for now. For Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion campaigns, Meta’s Business Help Centre says you no longer choose placements manually at the ad set level. The change is rolling out gradually, so some accounts may still show the old settings.

Which campaign objectives lost manual placements?

Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion. Awareness and Traffic are not affected for now, according to Meta’s help page as reported by Social Media Today and Relevant Audience in October 2026.

How do I stop my ads from showing on Audience Network?

Use the account-level placement exclusions in your ad account settings. Relevant Audience reports that these exclusions cover Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and the Facebook right column, and can now be set per objective. They apply to every campaign in the account that uses that objective, not to a single ad set.

What are placement value rules in Meta Ads?

Value rules let you tell Meta how much more or less a conversion from a given placement is worth to you, which raises or lowers your bids there. PPC Land reports that bid decreases are capped at 90%, so a value rule can make a placement much less competitive but cannot switch it off.

Do Advantage+ placements perform better than manual placements?

Meta’s own figures say Advantage+ placements delivered 11.7% lower cost per action (its Advantage+ placements help page, cited by PPC Land) and 10% lower cost per result (its updated placement-settings page, cited by Relevant Audience). Both come from Meta’s own experiments, with no published details, and are not independent results. Check your own placement breakdown before and after the change.

Is Meta removing placement controls for Awareness and Traffic too?

Meta has not announced that. Social Media Today’s analysis expects all Meta ads to lose manual placement control eventually, but that is a prediction, not a Meta announcement.

What should I do first after losing manual placements?

Review your placement breakdown, set any account-level exclusions you really need, and make sure every ad has assets for vertical and feed placements. Then decide whether value rules are worth testing for placements that bring low-quality results.
